Marketing Report


I’ve had a few days to digest the results of last week’s promotions, and overall, I’m pleased.  Hometown isn’t exactly jumping off the shelves now that it costs money again, but it’s moving, and that’s something it wasn’t doing before.  Perhaps more important (at least for now), Hometown is in the hands of hundreds of people who hadn’t heard of it before.

To tell the truth, I was a little disheartened at first.  It’s good that I’m being heard, but it’s a little distressing to think that people only want your work when you give it away for free.  Then this showed up on my Facebook feed:

So my Chef is telling me about this new book she downloaded on her kindle. She said she found it on Amazon select and had just missed the 3 day free download offer on it but she read the blurb and thought it sounded great so she bought it anyway and can’t wait to read it. I started to laugh and said the book doesn’t happen to be called “Hometown” does it? She said how would you know that? I told her to look at the author’s name. It’s Matthew Keville my older brother. Bought the book because it sounded great!!!

…and I felt much better.

(By the way, I have one more “free giveaway” day to use for Hometown this quarter.  Day to be announced.  Stay tuned.)

This whole experience has given me new perspective – and new ideas – on how to market my work.  Which means I have to announce some changes.

I’ve found that I like the promotional tools – to say nothing of the audience – for Kindle Select, and I’ve decided to move all of my work there.  Unfortunately, Kindle Select requires that my work be sold exclusively at Amazon.  So here’s what’s going to happen: for one week, my stories will remain up at Smashwords, Barnes and Noble, iTunes Books, and other vendors connected with Smashwords.  After that, I will unpublish those works from Smashwords.   They may linger for a few days at the other vendors, but shortly after that, my work will only be available at Amazon.

I’ll even be taking those stories down from this blog.  Writing theory, movie reviews, and all the other things I have to say will still be here, but with a few exceptions, after next week, my fiction will only be available through Amazon.

On a more positive note, our next big promotion, complete with giveaways, will be for The Truth of Rock and Roll:

I’ve already lowered the price, so for those who’ve never bought before, now might be the time.

By the way, you may well ask if I’ve been doing anything else with my time over the last few weeks.  After all, a promotion is primarily the work of the promoter, right?

The answer is yes.  I’ve been hard at work on a story for a special someone’s special occasion.  Come back tomorrow to see.
